Answers: I think the writer meant the defence force is spilting into two catergory. The rats are the group that is afraid and will retreat when something bad or a 'war' break out. Whereas the porcupine will curl themselves up to prepare to defend and fight back when needed. Not like the rats that retreats but porcupine will make its spike to prepare defending.

Answer: Maybe for your friends, family to the one whom u care the most. To the love ones. I would protect them even i were to put my life at stake its worth. Its only right to protect the one that u love.
